There’s unfortunately not enough to track, but I am starting to pay more attention to what I’m paying in!

That’s also very worthwhile. Sometimes outgoing paid subscriptions can get away from us!

Thanks Georgia! Written by Kristi is offline for a while while I figure out if it's still worth eating for. And I wrapped up Dog Snobs a while back but absolutely I'll be incorporating lots of dog stuff on this new one. It fits with the theme so much better.

It’s easy to track when it is $0 πŸ˜‚ though I do need to do better at setting up my finances separately from my general bank account

I've been tracking my Substack income from the beginning because (a) I wasn't sure how to get that info from Stripe for tax purposes (I've since figured it out), and (b) I've committed to donating 100% of the revenue I receive from paid subscriptions to charitable organizations. Thanks to you, Kristi, Writes of Passage celebrates its one-year anniversary tomorrow. Wouldn't be here without you!!

Has it really been ONE YEAR already?? That is amazing and feels like it went super fast! Congratulations and happy anniversary on it. Also, you're so smart tracking and separating it all. Total face-palm moment for me that I never thought of it. I truly love that you're donating your revenue to charity, what a beautiful gesture Cathy!

I never set up tracking or separate accounts from anything except my technical writing income, because revenue for my creative ventures wasn’t in my thinking. Purely a newsletter platform for me in 2022, and my newsletter will always be free. But for secondary Substack ventures? Hmmm πŸ€” I’m interested to see what happens with yours. Thanks for sharing.

Kristi Keller πŸ‡¨πŸ‡¦'s avatar

That was my train of thought in the beginning as well, until I started earning real revenue from both mine. This one has never been "all free" but my other one began that way and still earns enough that it's worth tracking.

However....yes.....affiliate stuff. I WISH I had been tracking that back to 2023. I'm super curious about this year as well.

Congratulations on stepping into your What's Next? Will you do a rewrite of your website too? The URL for Written by Kristi Keller took me to an expired website. In your reinvention, did you stop Dog Snobs entirely, or will you incorporate dog features in Home Body(ish) Magazine?

Doh!!! Absolutely brilliant β€” or maybe I’m exceedingly dim. I’m off to organize my income stream, more of a trickle really, but necessary none the less. Thanks Kristi and happy new year.

I'll keep tabs on this to see if I should try it myself.

Great post, Kristi! Now you’ve got me thinking, should I open a new bank account … I only started my paid subs a couple months ago. It’s still early days. Is it possible to change your stripe account after you’ve already connected it with a bank account?

I must say, your writing voice is exactly how I imagine your speaking voice would be! I really appreciate your sense of humour and play.

What about what kind of bank account, and also traditional banks or "other"? Suggestions?

Thought-provoking!-- and my brain NEEDS that kind of provoking!! Thanks, Kristi-- Happy New Year!! πŸ₯³

Kristi Keller πŸ‡¨πŸ‡¦'s avatar

You're welcome Mark! I'm really looking forward to being intentional about my income this year and knowing where it ALL comes from!

Congratulations on this new venture Kristi! I set up my stripe account separately so at least have that in my favor. Looking forward to your new site!!

Kristi Keller πŸ‡¨πŸ‡¦'s avatar

Thanks Jeanine. I have also had my Stripe accounts all separated. But when it all funnels into the same pot, it's so easy to ignore all streams of income and just spend it as it comes.

Jeanine Kitchel's avatar

Oh yeah, that for sure is true!

How do you set up a unique email for each publication? I thought they all went to one

address?

Kristi Keller πŸ‡¨πŸ‡¦'s avatar

They do for Substack. But you can still set up a dedicated email address for the greater business operation and forward Substack-related emails to the business one as they arrive in your Substack email account. If I'm not being clear, shoot me a DM and I'll try to explain it better.

I think I’ve been out of the loop for a month or so. I’ve got some catching up to do but what a great plan!! πŸ€”

Kristi Keller πŸ‡¨πŸ‡¦'s avatar

I think everyone is feeling it to a certain extent. The holiday season plus flu season really threw me off! I'm totally here for a fresh start.

This isn’t lame at all! I second everything you’ve written here. Everyone that β€œgoes paid” should have that revenue going to a separate account.

Even if one doesn’t regardless their newsletter as a business per se, it’s a good practice to have it structured like one.

Kristi Keller πŸ‡¨πŸ‡¦'s avatar

Thanks for reinforcing that Kevin. I wondered if this would fit in with "tips" or not lol. I totally regret not doing this from the beginning. I have been tracking the income in a spending app so I do know what I've earned through each publication but I’ve never done it PROPERLY until now.
