This is super helpful, thank you. I write a weekly music + personal essay project (They Might Be Giants songs as a jumping-off point), and I’ve definitely been thinking about how cross-posting could let me connect with folks who might never go looking for “personal lore drops as song essays” on their own. Excited to try flipping that toggle on.
Something I wanted to mention about cross-posting - it doesn't show up in your post feed in the app only on the desktop version. This may not be a big deal for some people but I post religiously every week and it annoyed me that it look like I hadn't sent something out for a week.
Yes YESSSS! So glad you wrote about this and showed us the value.
It’s just like on socials - reposting (the fab new feature on IG) and sharing a post on FB absolutely adds value and the great thing is, as you said, it’s clear that YOU are the “creator” and the other person is the “sharer”.
Thanks for another fantastic tip, Kristi!!
PS I can’t wait to watch you and Dre and your video!! ☺️🦋
Thanks for this. I really appreciate the technical walk-through. I'm always looking for stories to amplify 'cause this Substack exists to raise awareness about ocean issues/the environment. I also try to regularly share links to great stories in my posts.
Thanks for this timely post. I did a live with another Substacker, and now we want to collaborate more. I suggested that we cross post to one another's audiences, but she didn't get what that would look like. I was about to write careful instructions on how& why to cross-post when your post slid into my inbox!
Jessica Neighbor and I swapped posts recently, each of us reposting something from the other had written, that fit what we talk about. It was fun! Easy to invite someone to be a guest, with a quick email from Substack to verify.
I just checked about 10 articles from the substack home page and not a single one had this feature. Your article only had 3 items, but one was indeed cross-post! Are most people not using this???
Also, you only see 3 items in the dropdown because it's not your post. If you looked at the 3 dots on your own publication, you'd see lots of other options 😊
I have not yet cross-posted, but my first collaborator used the cross-post to post our collab on her Substack page. The collab was a pretty awesome experience, and I did get about two new subs because of the cross-post! Definetly worth having that option available😊
Didn’t know! I’m gonna run over to my dashboard and see if I have that on or off, and start noodling about on whom I might crosspost. Thank you so much.
Woohoo, I had it turned on! Now to have fun crossposting some other creators. Do you also cultivate mutual crossposts, like we would do with recommendations or collabs?
Hi Kristi, Do you think I should change my handle from Uma Girish to Light After Loss? My Notes show up under my name but I really want people to know my work. And that’s made clear by Light After Loss. But I’m keen to hear your thoughts.
I would say no, don't change it. The reason is because that's your profile name (your handle) and Light After Loss is your publication name. The two should stay separate just in case you decide to make another change down the road.
Mine is turned on! And yes, when Micromance Magazine pubbed by little short story, I cross-posted.
Micromance....what a cool name for a publication! I love that!

That's awesome Chase! Definitely look for others in your wheelhouse and talk about cross-posting and collaborating. It's a great growth tool.
How does this differ from restacking?
Restacking is just sharing to notes. Cross-posting gives the post a spot on your homepage, as though you wrote it.

Yah it could be bothersome to some. Not sure how many people would notice that if its just an app thing. The post still appears on your oub homepage.
Allow cross-posting already on. But oh! You set me up! Clever lady !!! Thanks again.
Yes but cross post is bad for seo
I'd never cater to SEO over networking and collaboration. Being human trumps algorithms and SEO any day.
I wish substack does not keep messing with the algorithm

Exactly. Cross posting helps both sides!
And yaay! Yes come watch us lol. We have exactly one podcast episode so far 😁 But it'll be a weekly gig plus we want guests. Will it be YOU??!!
Ummmmm yes plz! 🤩🌸

Haha perfect timing then! Glad I slid in at the right time 🙂

That's great, Mary! Such a nice way to collaborate 🙂

Tamsin, it could be that most people don't know about it, hence my post informing them. I have no way of knowing if people have opted in or not.
Mine's on, but no idea if it would have the same problem of not showing....? Anyway, many thanks!
Whew! I had that toggle already switched on. Thanks, as always, for the weekly tuneup, Kristi.
My pleasure 🙏 ☺️

Kimber, that's awesome! You're a perfect example of why this is so useful 😊

You're very welcome, Sage! ☺️

I've never done that on purpose, no. I usually only do it if I think someone's content will be useful to my audience.
I’ve never used this feature before. Thank you for educating me about this.
My pleasure, Uma!
