Stop Missing Out On This Valuable Substack Opportunity
When I realized I had ignored this I felt like the dumbest business person on earth 😂
Call my headline clickbait if you want to but there’s a REAL lesson to be learned here. Total face-palm moment on my part.
I’m sure you’ve heard allllll the Substack coaches and a hundred other writers tell you NOT to slack on your Welcome email.
Well, I’m here to become number 101.
Do NOT slack on your welcome email!
Here’s a real-life case study on why…
Some of you may not know that this newsletter is not my main publication on Substack. Wildhood Wanted is. It’s much larger and attracts far more attention than this one ever will. It’s the reason I came to Substack.
However, I started Unstack Substack (the one you’re reading right now) because this is work I love doing and I’m here all the time anyway. Might as well make myself useful.
A while back, I was updating and tweaking my main publication, as everyone should be doing regularly. Upon revisiting my Welcome email I realized that I had NEVER tied my two Substacks together. Meaning that all 3200+ subscribers over at my other pub quite possibly have no clue that my real-life job is to help them.
Talk about completely missing the boat. 😂😂
The worst thing about this realization was that for several months, I had an influx of subscribers over at my main pub due to a few viral Notes.
Exactly ZERO of those subscribers were made aware of my VA business.
By not including an introduction to my Substack services as part of my welcome email on my big publication, I wasted several hundred possible opportunities to work with those writers. UGH.
I pretty much broke the one cardinal rule I overstated in this post:
Here’s what you need to do RIGHT NOW….
Go into your dashboard, head to settings, scroll down to EMAILS and EDIT YOUR WELCOME EMAIL!!
If you run a business that you want people to know about, ADD IT.
If you offer online courses that you want people to know about, ADD IT.
If you have multiple Substacks, TELL PEOPLE!
If you’re a psychic medium who does creepy ghost readings as a side hustle, TELL PEOPLE!
Whatever it is you want them to know…jump on this opportunity to inform every new subscriber about it in your Welcome email. It gets sent automatically every single time a new person subscribes so USE IT.
If you haven’t fully customized it to your advantage? You’re wasting valuable opportunities here.
Unstack Substack deliveries are meant to be short and sweet, and not clutter up your inbox or your day. 😊
If your tolerance for tinkering with Substack is below sea level, you’ve got options! Send me your to-do list and forget about it.
One of those “obvious” things that is so easy to miss, right? I think a lot of people who consider themselves writers first have a hard time thinking like a marketer.
Funnily enough, that's the next thing I'm planning to work on - having finally got my 'About Page' sorted out. I think like a lot of people on here, I was so focussed on the writing aspect and getting work 'out there' that I neglected these incredible marketing opportunities that are there to help us. I also think the 'Welcome Email' might be a nice place to put links to a few previous highlights a new reader may have missed. But advertising any services you offer, or books you have out, is absolutely crucial as well... 😎
