How To Fill Lonely Blank Spots In Your Publishing Schedule
For those weeks when you'd rather do literally ANYTHING than come up with a fresh new post.
I’m currently sitting in a room full of chaos and Depends boxes. Yes, you read that correctly. Depends…the ultra-absorbent undergarment with “DryShield” technology.
This could mean one of two things:
Either I work SO hard as a Substack virtual assistant that I don’t take time for pee breaks, or…
I’m packing to move next week and a lady from a retirement home dropped off a load of empty boxes I could use.
If only my clients knew what was hiding behind my fake Zoom backdrop the past couple of weeks, hey?
The moral of the story is not Depends, though. It’s that I couldn’t come up with fresh content for you because I was just too busy behind the scenes.
Which brings us to this week’s fantabulous piece of Substack advice…
Repurposing your old content!
This is not a new concept but it’s probably not at the forefront of your mind when you're racking your brains for something fresh to write about on uninspired days.
The reason repurposing is such a great practice is that nobody sees your old content. Nobody is scrolling back to 1863 to see what your first five posts were about and some of it was GREAT content!
But it’s dying a slow death in the fifty-cent bin at the dollar store.
Take this post for example:
I only had 43 subscribers the day I sent that one out. Today we have 1601 of you here. Only 297 eyeballs have ever landed on that post and it’s some damn good advice in there!
It’s devastating when great guidance goes to waste.
So, my advice for you this week is two-fold….
A) Repurpose your old content AND…
B) Go learn how to find fabulous testimonials you didn’t even know you had!
A few fun things I’ve learned about trying to move to a new home while running an online business:
I need a clone.
I need two clones.
I stress WAY too much about whether or not the internet company will show up on time at my new address.
My clients (yes, you lovely writer people) are very gracious and understanding.
Depends boxes are EXCELLENT for moving! They’re sturdier and bigger than liquor store boxes and they have handles on the sides! Pro packing tip right there!
Little Caesars pizza. That is all.
This literally may be the best opening paragraph I have ever read! I am obsessed with you packing your belongings in Depends boxes! Also great advice as usual! Good luck with the move!
"The reason repurposing is such a great practice is that nobody sees your old content. Nobody is scrolling back to 1863 to see what your first five posts were about and some of it was GREAT content!"
Exactly, Kristi. That's the reason for my "Looking Back" series. With new subscribers every week, it's a great way to introduce them to past posts. I try to find posts from roughly a year previously which have good usable content. Since I started this series in January, I have yet for someone to comment t hat they have already read it! LOL.
