Anthony, it's okay NOT to have an author website. You're totally fine just being on Substack. This was just a suggestion to those who might want something outside of Substack.
You can build on whichever platform you like. I mentioned Squarespace in this post because when I build websites for people, I use Squarespace.
Absolutely. I think of having my own website like I think of having my own newsletter (outside of Substack). I also love Squarespace and have designed all my sites and sites for friends and colleagues. You can find it all here: www.aliciamrodriguez.com Thanks for asking and for supporting others in their endeavors!
I am shutting down my personal website over the next year. I am renewing the web host for the last time. It's too pricey and I'm just moving what I want to hold on to over here. I will keep the domain for a bit.
Having a website adds credibility to you. These are good points and sites like Medium and Substack will only help bring more traffic to it. I do have a blog on my site and syndicate it on Medium when I update it.
I reworked the site not too long ago. I thought I had a link at the top left for 'Field Notes' but I'll have to double check. I'm on vacation for a few days, but when I get back I'll see if there's a way to make a more prominent link to it. Maybe just naming the link 'Blog' would help?
I honestly don't know which way to go with this. I have erikhoganphotography.com for my portfolio site (free with my photo editing software subscription). It looks ok, but it gives me no option for blogging or e-commerce. It's one of the reasons I started with Substack. I tried having that as a landing page to either direct people to the galleries or Field Notes, but this seems like an extra unnecessary step. And this doesn't even touch the question of a custom domain for Field Notes! Any thoughts?
I haven't tried that one. I do have an account at shootproof.com. It is free for up to 100 images and allows for print sales. My thought was that, if successful, I'd pay for an account and make it my portfolio site. However, I've never made a print sale, so I've stuck with the free Adobe site.
I just went to your website and honestly, I think all is fine the way it is. It's your personal name, the gallery aspect looks beautiful, the about link comes back here to Substack.
It is weird that it doesn't offer you a blogging option BUT Substack does. Could you add one more link to your website navigation that says "Blog" and point it back here?
People have been saying to me for years I should get a website. I always resisted it, because it was extra outlay, and when I was Freelancing I needed every penny! But these days, they have become far more crucial. I think you're absolutely right that you need somewhere central where your readers, and potential new readers, can find you and your latest projects - ideally, somewhere that will always come up as the top hit on Google! I think the time may have come for me to take the plunge and set something up... π
You should know me well enough by now to understand that I can't write anything seriously lol.
And, are you referring to a Substack "sign up" reference on your website? For placement, I'd place it in order of importance. If you want people to find you here first, before your other online spaces, keep it near the top.
HI - great insights as to the benefit of having your own website. I do have a website, on Squarespace - www.carolynjrobertsartist.co.uk - where I sell my work, along with occasional blog posts. I probably should investigate Squarespace as a way of sending out newsletters, but at the moment I'm here on Substack for longer form writing .
Honestly, I think Substack will always be better for newsletters. It's just easier and much more interactive. When I built an author website for Tim Ebl last month we included a link back to his matching branded newsletter here.
HELLO, I don't have and never had a website. I don't even know how to do it. I have this here on substack https://wwwanthonyr.substack.com/?utm_source=substack&utm_medium=web&utm_campaign=substack_profile
What do you think?
What is the best site to create a website?
Any help I can receive will be welcome.
Thanks.

Thank you for the advice. I don't understand Substack well yet.
Yes it can be confusing when you first start out but stick with it! There are lots of people here who can help!
I use linktree. What are your thoughts on that?
For me the pros are the simplicity of not having to manage an author website but it serves the same function.

Whatever works best for you! Iβve used Linktree in the past as well.
I want to be President of the internet haha π π π
Hahahaha are you sure??? That could be worse than being president of the United States π€£π€£
Probably but it sounds really cool. ha.

Oooh I'm heading to your site now. I love looking at how other people design their stuff.
I did have some help on this most recent site. I redo my site probably every three years. Refreshing it is essential.
Yes it is. I don't know how many times I revamped my old travel blog over 10 years!
Having a website is better because you can tailor the keywords and do manual google crawls on your pages.
I am shutting down my personal website over the next year. I am renewing the web host for the last time. It's too pricey and I'm just moving what I want to hold on to over here. I will keep the domain for a bit.
I've done that a few times over the years as well. I've always kept my domain but have let my site go more than once.
I have shut down other websites. This is my last one and it feels sentimental.

Always a great idea to diversify, 100%
I love seeing how others are managing their content.

I'm also on my mobile looking at it. Maybe it looks different on desktop.
Enjoy your vacation!! π

Have you looked into using Pixels dot com to sell your work?
I haven't tried that one. I do have an account at shootproof.com. It is free for up to 100 images and allows for print sales. My thought was that, if successful, I'd pay for an account and make it my portfolio site. However, I've never made a print sale, so I've stuck with the free Adobe site.
Never heard of it. What kind of work do people sell there? I don't know that I have things to sell!
Art work and photography
Ooooh I don't have any of those worthy of selling π

Yes Chris, I really think it's important regardless of whether you write content on it or not. Your name will never change!
Hi doll. I love that you manage to make a how-to essay hilarious.
Great idea to feature a Substack post on the website. Is there an ideal placement? Thx. π
You should know me well enough by now to understand that I can't write anything seriously lol.

Oh. That makes sense. Thx. π

I'm going to check out your site now π
Great points Kristi! Thanks πΊ
I am a newbie writer, writing on Substack and Medium. My plan is to set up a website when I am a bit further down the road.
That's excellent. Everything in stages and baby steps!
