And thank YOU for the inspiration to write this! You have no idea how awesome your email came across when I received it. I've been dying to ask you how it converted but I know I can't be the only one who clicked YES right away.
PS: I'm about to start listening to your current interview post while I cook dinner.
I also like the way you did that. I plan to open up paid subscriptions in April or May, but don't have much extra to offer for the paid version. This is a great way to pitch it!
Remember - you don’t need a special offer, a bonus, or an extra. You’ve probably got a few readers who’d love to support your work this weekend if they had the chance.
Seth, you're so correct! I also don't offer anything special with my paid option yet people still pay! I think those who truly appreciate the person behind writing they love will pay regardless.
Agreed. I offer a discount because my posting frequency is very low and somewhat unpredictable, so I wanted to make the price commiserate with the offering. I think $5/month is a great minimum for all you normal people!
Love love love this - I saw a quote recently from Dolly Parton who said something like “If I don’t tell people who I am and what I do how will they know?” And that’s DOLLY PARTON. I have that quote somewhere in my Notes feed (typing this on my phone right now)
Wow! See? You really NEVER know what's going on outside of your own bubble! If Dolly Parton thinks that then we have every right (and obligation) to make ourselves known!
Did you set it up so that your archives automatically get paywalled after a certain length of time? I've often wondered if I should do that or if it matters? Hmmmm
Russell Nohelty talked about something like this a while back and said he either paywalled a post or didn't because with setting it up automatically it kept flipping back and drove him mad.
Sorry I can't be clearer but it was to do with automatically having posts paywalled at a later date. 🤔
Ah I think when I was doing it automated but wanted to keep some posts free still they seemed to keep getting paywalled by the automation. That was it! So I had to keep going back and removing the paywall for those I still wanted to be free.
I wouldn't say it's foolish but I just wonder about conversion. I rarely see anyone engage with my old posts unless I reshare it.
There's also the argument that if you paywall it and reshare it, potential viewers can see that you had lots of engagement on it and may feel compelled to pay to see what all the hype is about. I dunno.
I am Rolando Andrade. I've dreamed of being a writer ever since I was a child. I'm very close to pursuing it and have already published texts in some chapters as a co-author. I'd love you to subscribe to my substack Putide the Therapy room", so that you can give me feedback on my work. All I'm asking for is feedback, so that I can improve.
I promise you'll learn new things when you read what I write.
Wow! This has really taken off since the last time I was here. It's a very worthy and valuable successor to 'Office Hours'. You're doing a great job... 😎
Thank you .. your attitude to this reminds me a little of Mel Robbins .. easy to understand, straight to the point and right !
I need people who tell it as it is in my life. I’m starting to tell people what I do, what I want (still struggle with that word .. from childhood days .. want isn’t a nice word.. what I’d like is what I should say)
You’re right .. if we don’t tell them .. they won’t know.
I’m gradually learning how Substack works and I’ve set up paid subscriptions because “why not”? . It my way of saying I think my writing is “good enough “ / has value and I’m open to receiving.
You're so welcome Carolyn! I totally understand the concept of being shy to tell people exactly what we'd like them to do with our information. My mom always said, "The squeaky wheel gets the grease." 😁
About setting up your paid subscriptions...I agree..why not? I have mine turned on for my main publication and have been pleasantly surprised that people want to pay me just for value!
I have asked many time for support on pretty much every platform out there. Even when I didn't have money for rent. Never worked. But people did not notice me in school either. Maybe one day.
Also I dislike to sound like a broken record about all the stuff I sell etc 😭
Thanks for the shout out! Who knew I was doing something right?! 😅

Absolutely! I’ve got nothing paywalled, no special offer and I got like 22 paid subs. Let people support ya haha

Wow, this makes me feel hopeful! I'm curious to see what happens.
Well you know for sure you have ONE! My pledge is there!
Yes! Your support has been unparalleled.
Go figure!
Nice. 🙏🥰

Thanks for your awesome comments, Seth!
PS here's the link to that quote: https://substack.com/@elissaaltman/note/c-49184061
Thank you! I read that a couple weeks ago and lost track of where I read it. I’m glad to see it re-quoted and to get the link!

My older posts are paywalled, but I haven’t asked for anything yet. I’ll put some thought into this. I had 2 subscribers but I’m back to zero now.

Hmmm that sounds weird, flipping back all by itself?
Sorry I can't be clearer but it was to do with automatically having posts paywalled at a later date. 🤔

Oooooh yeah, there's a setting in the dashboard where you can automatically paywall after a time set by you.
That's it! Yes. I stopped it for this reason I mantion above
I just turned on the paywall for my archives. Not sure it is effective move to drive paid subscriptions.
I've heard of lots of people who've done it. What I wonder is how often someone lands on my archived posts.
I'm already thinking to undo what I just did. Seems foolish.

It is all quite confusing. I've been sharing posts from the paywall at the end of my new posts and so far no conversion.
Yes, but I’ve sprung a few of them back out so I can use them for promotion purposes.
Thank you Kristi Keller. I was needing this
My pleasure!!

Love the bravery Rolando! You put it out there!
If you're not brave, how can you become a writer?
Getting the work out there is the most important step. Many people never get that far, so you've already achieved something huge! Well done... 😎
Thanks Chris
Awesome service 😊
After reading this, I messed around with my CTAs in my posts and made them more obvious.
Awesome first step. Monitor whether it makes a difference going forward!
This was great, thank you! I think I’ll be adding something to your do-do list!
My do-do list? 😁 Sounds like I'm in trouble!
Haha, oops! I most definitely didn't mean it to sound that way. Sorry💕

Thank you so much Chris! 😃
Found u at office hours! Welcome to substack!
I want people to subscribe to your newsletter(s) :D
And I want them to also subscribe to yours!

Great suggestions - I struggle all the time with how much we can do to put ourselves out there and the best ways to do it
I think we all do, Jack. I wrote this and yet, I struggle with it sometimes!
I have asked many time for support on pretty much every platform out there. Even when I didn't have money for rent. Never worked. But people did not notice me in school either. Maybe one day.

I hear you about sounding like a broken record. Maybe there are creative ways to weave it into other conversations?
I'm all out on my creative ways at the moment.
Do you have any? 😊
What do you sell?
My art as prints and wallpapers. Nothing fancy.
Hmmmm I'm no expert with art. What is your unique edge with your art?
Try reading this post...it'll give you a HUGE boost in how to create an edge for yourself.
