It’s actually pretty cool for step-by-step screenshot tutorials. I’ve created a bunch in advance so that when someone asks the question I have a tutorial to send.

This is incredibly helpful. I do have a question, because I've seen some people mention in the comments about their layout: if you use certain tags for certain kinds of posts in an advanced layout setup, does that mean it organizes them visually for people who visit your website/page?

Kristi Keller 🇨🇦's avatar

Yes, but only when viewing on the web (not the app). For example, if you look at my homepage on your laptop, you'll see how mine is arranged using tags.

Oh, that's so neat, though! I do like to design for the desktop look, too, so I'll have to check that out!

I am not sure how to look at sucessful writers substack tags. Where are they in my posts?

Expand full comment
Kristi Keller 🇨🇦's avatar

Your tags are located in your post settings or in your dashboard (look at the tutorial in my post)

You can't see other people's tags.

Brilliant! Thank you so much! I'd been sending my newsletter on Substack and SEO tagging like crazy for three years before I became active on Substack online. You've saved me so much time showing me that I can eliminate the tags in the settings and will not have to go through three years of posts on my Wild Arisings substack!

i've never used hashtags on substack.

I use the categories that they have up there and now I'm learning to use certain phrases like you use here for your how to and I guess that's created with sections and tags so that the article will fall into the correct section on the homepage

Expand full comment
Kristi Keller 🇨🇦's avatar

Exactly, Kathleen! Once you have your homepage set up with the advanced layout option, you use tags to organize it.

I think I’ve gotten it now. what I do is when I set up the section, I set it up with section and select that particular tag

and that tag doesn’t have to be like one word like live or challenge. It can be a phrase

I’ve watched a few videos but I like the way you put it because I understand it a little bit better this way and like I said I’ve been here on Substack since late July last year and I’ve had some mentors and no one has ever mentioned this to me.

By the way, I loved your live the other day with I think it’s Judy wilding (I’m not sure if I have the name right) but as an American citizen who hates what’s been going on in this country since the 1900s, I support Canada 100%. We need a revolution here and and I know blood will be shed but you know what? I’ll be the first in line!

Our government has been terrorizing and poisoning not only us but other countries and they’ve been involved with the UN and I know now that it’s global, but between the highest banking systems, which includes the Federal Reserve, which is not in America and not Federal, it’s global, and then the bank of England, etc. it’s just a mess and it’s not gonna get any better

so we have to stand together whether it we’re in different countries or not and be strong and support and love each other. I don’t hang out with people at all. I take care of my parents on 10 acres. My lifestyle change in 2021 when I walked from working in a horrific medical system. Surprising, I was in it for almost 3 decades being a holistic person, but I did try to change the system. Unfortunately, I was unable to do that but I was able to make a dent in it everywhere I do travel nursing.

all my friends are all online, so I appreciate you and what you’re doing and I’m so glad I’ve met you. I’ve seen your name around a lot but seeing you on camera and getting to know you that way well, it was just simply delightful 💯🙏🥰

This was so helpful! I read one of your earlier posts, so I didn’t tag everything (excuse the pun). But there might be a couple I’d like to see go. Thanks for the step-by-step guide for how to delete them.

Is it possible to delete them in bulk, or do you have to do it one at a time?

Kristi Keller 🇨🇦's avatar

As far as I know, it's one at a time. Sadly. It would be nice if there was a check box beside each one so we could select many and delete.

I was about to creat more tags, but after reading this, I am now thinking I should condense some of them into one and make my navigation bar a lot tidier.

Expand full comment
Kristi Keller 🇨🇦's avatar

I think as long as they're serving a purpose on your nav bar, it's fine to keep them. I just chose to eliminate ones that I've only used once or twice because they're serving no purpose at all.

It's a pity we can't add a description at the top of each Tag page to indicate what people can find. In the same way, we can do in WordPress Category pages.

Kristi Keller 🇨🇦's avatar

Embarrassed to say I had HUNDREDS and deleted them each one by one weeks ago. Took HOURS and a lot of patience (and this is how I spend Friday nights now? Sad.)

But I wonder if I shot myself in the foot. Since I nuked all my tags, my growth has been slow AF. Like, only 200 new subs in a MONTH. I had been doing that many weekly.

Wah!!

Kristi Keller 🇨🇦's avatar

No I don't think your growth would've been stunted by deleting tags. Only a couple weeks ago, I saw Hamish write that tags are NOT a major player in growth. If i could remember where I saw that comment I'd show you. But stop fretting, I don't think you did anything wrong!
