Share a laugh with me. Okay, maybe a chuckle. I have a subscriber who converted to paying. She wrote a nice blurb saying why, and then promptly cancelled her paid subscription and kept the free. I don't why it bothers me every time I see her face still showing as paying and how worth spending the $5 a month was to support my work. It's a minor thing but ugh, so patently false!

That's neat! I didn't know that was available. Thank you!

Great tips! I just updated my about page and it makes it better! I always forget about social proof, but it matters.

Hi Kristi,

I'm wondering about a couple things that are not obvious how to do them.

The first question is based on the fact that I have a few different sections to my blog. Basically it's different topics. However, one of them I'd like to put behind a paywall.

is there a way to have only one topic behind a paywall?

The other question is, how to separate part of the text as a "free teaser" and then the reader has to subscribe to get the rest of the story?

(That's how Ash Ambirge hooked me!)

Thank you!

These are great questions for our monthly Ask Anything posts. But I'll do you a solid and answer here anyway.

You can't specify a "topic" to go behind the paywall. You can only paywall individual posts. You have to choose to paywall or not to paywall as you publish each post. And you can go back and edit/add a paywall to any of your past posts.

For the teaser, you can insert your paywall wherever you wish inside each post. There's a dropdown menu in your post drafts called MORE (top far right). In that dropdown there is a paywall option. You can insert that anywhere you want!

I'll be mostly NOT working through the holidays so if more important questions come up, write them down and save them for our January 3rd Ask Anything day 😊

I’ve been taking screenshots of Note restacks too, with kind words and recommendations, popping them in a folder on my desktop. I guess I need to ask if I can use them but if they’re publicly re-stacked anyway many I don’t…

That's a great idea as well Lisa. I believe we can download a pretty image of individual notes as well. Click on the 3 dots beside the note and see what you find. 😉

hmmm...yep, it works on a desktop!

I actually just did it on the app too! I downloaded someone else's not into an image.

that option didn't come up for me. Will try again

Me too!

Amazing!!! Now you can use them anytime, anywhere! 😊

Some of them don't have the 'share' option - does that mean the person didn't give permission to use their quote?

Expand full comment

Yes, they have the option to keep it private.

As it is with everything Substack offers this is a wonderful endorsement opportunity. Personally, though, I need to achieve a sense of popularity before I can ask for paid subcriptions. I have no excusive value to offer for upgrades. Right now likes and restacks sustain and encourage me. I guess that's another way of admitting I'm not driven. Still, I enjoy my days.

Dave, in my experience, people pay because of you, not necessarily the content. I have a few paid subscribers ar my dog Substack and I don't offer anything exclusive there. They just wanted to support me.

But I do understand your thinking as well.
