Excellent insight! I played around with our banner a year or two ago, and created some new ones, and then I kept forgetting to change them when I posted, so I stopped. Anyone else experience that and have any tips? Probably keep a checklist or something -- I just wish Substack would remind me like it does with the subscribe buttons!

Yah i think you mostly have to write it on your calendar...so manual lol.

I only change mine with the seasons and holidays. New Years is over so I suppose maybe Valentine’s will be next 😁

And just realized you offer this service. Saving this for later.😅

So funny that this just came on my feed as I spent 3 hours today unsuccessfully trying to figure out how the heck to create a banner in this format until finally giving up.😅 Unfortunately, I'm not technically savvy enough to figure out how to utilize this space. I'll have to hire a teenager to help me design that part.

Lol "hire a teenager" is a great business name 😁

Thank you, Kristi! I'm just getting started on Substack and fighting my way through all the settings and configuration needed to launch a new publication (Family Business Is Better) over the next couple of weeks, so this post was REALLY helpful! Thank you so much.

Love this! Thank you for the reminder that our headers can do a lot of the heavy work for us: attracting readers/community members, subscribers, etc. Thinking about how I can better optimize my header now.

That's awesome Michelle! I love it when people have a-ha moments with new ideas.

I don't send newsletters, but I absolutely do see an advantage giving readers that option! I once got started on a newsletter in 2019 or 2020 so that I can get people interested in my writing. That was when my Wordpress was dormant and still is. Now that I have a busy Substack (by busy I mean with posts, notes, comments, and messages), I may eventually jump into a newsletter as well. Thank you for sharing!

Ok. I must have missed this 82 days ago. I need an upgrade. 🙏

LOL did you actually count the days?

Expand full comment

It says number of days old on post.

Oh! You just taught me something I've never noticed before!

Thanks, enjoyed doing this after reading your post! Though it did occur to me after I'd done it that only people who've already subscribed will see it, which perhaps means I should make it different... They're actually not going to see it until they open the email, right?

Expand full comment

That's correct, only email subscribers will see it.

This was actually helpful. Thank you!

I've seen that option at the top of the post while creating and never stopped to think what it was. Thanks so much for this post! Will start using it on my next newsletter!

So helpful! And now I’m wondering what are all the million other substack things I don’t know 🤔

Lol well go through my posts because I've covered a lot. But also, I'm starting Ask Anything days on Friday Dec 6th. It'll be the first Friday of every month and you can keep track of the questions that pop up in the threads. Maybe you'll have some of the same!
